Come out and catch this soul band, before Mr Monday Night, Brian Scartocci! They are giving us hope for the next generation of musicians! With residencies both in Austin and Brenham, folks are taking notice of the talent and energy that KITES bring to stage. Their repertoire draws from the greats: Stevie Wonder, Isley Bros, James Brown, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke & Sly Stone.
KITES is a group of seven talented young musicians from Texas, led by three brothers. The oldest brother, Paul, manages the band, handling the booking, song arrangements, and recording production, and while on stage plays guitar and keyboards, as well as singing lead and backing vocals. Kurt, the middle brother, is the main frontman for the band, singing lead and backing vocals while holding down the bottom end on bass guitar. The youngest brother, Neil, is quickly learning the ropes of performing, playing keyboard and adding the high notes to the vocal harmonies. He has also been spotted recently doing a mean early Michael Jackson impersonation as a lead singer!
Paul and Kurt started the band as a vehicle to sharpen their songwriting and performance skills, and at first played locally with hired sidemen, before finding the crew that would become the existing lineup. Paul met the drummer, Trey, and trumpet player, Jarvis, while majoring in music at Blinn College in Brenham; he then met the sax player, Damien, and lead guitarist, Danny, while living in Austin for a year gigging with several bands and performing as a free-lance keyboardist. Finally, Paul and Kurt drafted little brother Neil into the band, and put him to work playing keyboards so Paul could play more guitar.
As KITES says about themselves: At our shows, we play classic soul and funk hits from the 60s and 70s, which is a good niche for us because the songs are so fun to play and for audiences to dance to! During our time together, we have grown immeasurably as performers and as friends, and playing hit songs has taught us a lot about songwriting. We have put a lot of hard work into this project, and we hope it shows in the music.
